Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board was established on 21st December 2011 with a view to promoting uninterrupted, hygienic, piped drinking water and hygienic environment in the Guwahati Metropolitan Area (GMA) in accordance with the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board Act, 2009, published on 28th February 2009.
Period: Water quality is generally monitored during the period of operation.
Monitoring items :
The following items are monitored.
Water Temperature (air and water), PH, Turbidity, Color, Nitrate Nitrogen, Fluoride, Total Coliform, E. Coliform, BOD, total dissolved solids, iron, dissolved oxygen.
Tap water and Water Treatment Plant: Temperature (air and water), PH, Turbidity, Color, Chlorine residue, Ammonia, Nitrate Nitrogen, Fluoride, Total Coliform, E. Coliform, Total dissolved solids, Total alkalinity, Arsenic, Iron
Waterbody (intake site): Once a month
Water Treatment Plant: Once a day
Public water tap and Household tap: Once a month
The sampling includes pre-treatment and preservation of collected samples which is done according to the standard methods such as the Indian standards or internationally accepted standards. The water quality tests will be carried out on-site for some parameters and at an authorized laboratory for most parameters. The test methods will be based on the Indian standards or APHA-AWWA-WEF (Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater).
For Fresh Water, primary water quality criteria are applied, Central Pollution Control Board for Classification of Streams and the Indian Standards, as well as the International Standards, are for Drinking Water (and water source)
